Choose a PlayStation around the games and discs you want to use, then check the full model number. A newer generation does not automatically replace every older console, and a familiar case name does not settle drive, controller, or backward-compatibility questions.
Start with a three-game list
Write down three games that would justify owning the console. For each, record the platform printed on the disc or digital listing, the edition, and any required peripheral. This turns a broad search for “a PlayStation” into a checkable question: can this specific machine run these specific copies? A remaster, a streamed version, and an original disc are separate routes to playing a game.
| Console family | Useful starting point | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation / PS one | An original PlayStation disc collection and period accessories. | Exact model/region, save-card support, controller condition, and an analog-to-display connection. |
| PlayStation 2 | PS2 software and the appropriate older-disc support described in its manual. | Full SCPH number, tray or lid clearance, power equipment, memory card and video path. |
| PlayStation 3 | PS3 software with model-specific older-format limits. | Do not infer PS2 support from the PS3 name or from an internal memory-card menu. |
| PlayStation 4 | A PS4 library on PS4 hardware. | Exact game edition, controller requirements, storage and whether the purchase includes the necessary discs. |
| PlayStation 5 family | PS5 software and supported PS4 games. | A working compatible disc drive for physical games, exact CFI model, and title-specific compatibility. |
Generation names are only the first filter
Sony’s official timeline separates the original PlayStation, PS one redesign, numbered generations, and handheld branches. That history is useful for identifying a product family; it is not a compatibility chart. PSP and PS Vita have their own software and accessories, so include their exact names when researching a handheld rather than treating them as smaller versions of a numbered home console.
The PS3 and PS5 checks that prevent the wrong purchase
Sony’s CECH-2501B manual explicitly says that this PS3 model does not play PlayStation 2 format software. That concrete example is why an advertisement saying only “PS3, backward compatible” needs a model number and a demonstration of your intended game. Do not generalize one revision’s capabilities to the whole family.
For PS5, PlayStation’s current guidance supports most PS4 games, with exceptions and feature differences. A supported PS4 disc must remain in the drive when played; PS3 discs are not supported. If a seller describes a PS5 as digital, check whether the actual unit has a compatible drive fitted and whether any planned add-on drive is supported by that exact model. A digital purchase and a physical-disc license are different ownership paths.
Build the complete setup before comparing prices
For a used machine, list the console, correct regional power equipment, controller, save storage, video cable, and any converter. For an HDMI-era console, identify the output port and include a suitable cable. For PS1 or PS2, trace the analog signal through the TV input or a compatible active converter. Price each missing item before deciding that the lower console-only price wins.
Ask the seller to show a cold start, a game reaching playable action, controller inputs, and a saved game being loaded. These are inspection requests, not proof of a future failure rate. If the model label or return terms are unclear, resolve that uncertainty before paying.
Choose the next guide from your actual problem
Use the PS2 Fat versus Slim model guide for chassis and power differences, PS2 component and HDMI guidance for the display path, or the PS1 smart-TV guide for an original PlayStation. Once the hardware is settled, the PlayStation games hub helps you choose what to play. This page’s job is to establish the machine and ownership requirements first.
