“Offline co-op” answers whether two people can play together without an internet connection during the session. It does not establish that a new disc, download, account or subscription will be ready without earlier online setup.
A grounded starting point: It Takes Two
PlayStation’s PS5 listing says online play is optional and confirms local couch play without an internet connection. EA describes It Takes Two as a two-person cooperative game, but its current support page identifies a separate Xbox Series X offline-launch issue. That makes it a useful candidate for a pair sharing one screen.
Choose the actual PS5 or Xbox edition you intend to use. The documented local feature is not an installation test of every physical pressing, regional bundle or digital entitlement. For Xbox, check the exact store edition and access method rather than borrowing every field from the PlayStation listing.
| Stage | What to verify | What “offline co-op” does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Acquire | Full game versus trial, pass or subscription access | A free companion download is a permanent full-game license. |
| Install | Required download, current update and free storage | The package contains every needed file. |
| Authorize | Account and console access configuration | Every account can launch the installed game offline. |
| Play | Local mode and controller requirements | Online player counts equal local players. |
Treat Friend’s Pass separately
Friend’s Pass is an invitation/access feature with its own conditions. It is useful to understand when your partner is on another machine, but it should not complicate a simple plan for two people on one console. Confirm you own the full game and select the local option. Do not describe online subscription requirements as a universal requirement for the offline mode.
Current Xbox Series X caveat
EA’s current support page, checked November 2, 2026, says an offline Xbox Series X may launch Friend’s Pass instead of the full game or report an offline error. Its documented workaround starts the game online before disconnecting and may need repeating. Do not rely on this title for uninterrupted, fully disconnected Xbox play merely because an older general FAQ says couch co-op works offline. Recheck the current issue and test your exact installation.
Run an offline rehearsal
Complete the normal installation and updates while connected. Launch the full game on the account and console you will use, connect both controllers and create or load a local session. Then test the intended offline state before relying on it for a trip or an evening without service. If the console asks to verify a license, resolve that exact account/access issue through its official support rather than buying another copy immediately.
Keep the outcome in your notes: edition, format, console, account setup and test date. A successful rehearsal of your installation is much stronger evidence for your situation than a broad store label.
Compare candidates on equal terms
For another local co-op title, repeat the same checks and record the result beside It Takes Two. A title with one to four local players may offer a different kind of flexibility; a two-player-only design may require the same partner throughout. This guide does not claim an independently tested offline shortlist or universal installation guarantee.
