Choose standard Pandemic for resettable sessions. Choose Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 for a campaign in which decisions affect later games. The difference is commitment and changing state, not simply another theme.

Compare session structure

Standard Pandemic is cooperative play for two to four people. Legacy: Season 1 carries decisions and discoveries forward, with sealed material and changes to the game. Designer Matt Leacock says Season 1 was designed for twelve to twenty-four plays. That is a campaign range, not a guaranteed number of evenings for your group.

Group continuity is a preference, not an absolute rule

The designer’s FAQ explicitly permits adding, dropping or swapping players during the campaign. A consistent group may enjoy shared discovery, but do not claim it is mandatory. Someone joining later needs a clear briefing and must accept earlier decisions they did not make.

Protect the experience you are buying

For a used Legacy copy, ask whether play has begun, whether writing or stickers were applied, and whether sealed material was opened. A tidy box is not proof of a fresh campaign. Do not assume a reset kit exists without publisher confirmation.

If the group meets unpredictably and wants a complete experience per visit, standard Pandemic may fit. If it wants an ongoing shared story, Legacy may suit that goal. Red and blue Season 1 boxes differ in cover presentation according to the designer; they are not two required halves of a campaign.
