Cross-Play vs Cross-Progression: Check Both Before Buying a Multiplayer Game

Cross-play asks whether people on different systems can join a match. Cross-progression asks whether one person’s progress follows them between systems.

Define the exact scenario

For cross-play, name both platforms, game versions and the mode. For progression, name the existing account, destination platform and content you want to retain. A precise question can be checked; “works across platforms” can hide several limitations.

Feature Question
Cross-play Can these versions join this mode?
Cross-progression Will this account retain the specified progress?
Cross-buy Does one purchase include another platform version?
Cross-generation play Can older and newer console versions connect?

Account identity can decide the answer

EA’s current Apex Legends support says progress belongs to the EA Account, with platform accounts linked to it. Progress cannot be moved to a different EA Account, and unlinking can remove access to content. An account-linking change is therefore not a harmless compatibility experiment.

Check current publisher instructions before making account changes. An old launch announcement or generic multiplayer tag is insufficient for an exact platform pair.

Compare content and matchmaking separately

Even where cross-play exists, competitive queues, input pools, voice chat or mode availability may differ. Cross-progression can still have separate rules for currency, platform-exclusive items or entitlements. Record those answers rather than marking a universal yes.

Before buying another copy, ask whether it is actually required and have the friend confirm their version. If sources conflict, keep that platform pair unverified until current publisher guidance resolves it. A visible unknown is more useful than a confident but unsupported promise.

A current example: It Takes Two

EA’s September 9, 2026 announcement and current support describe cross-play connecting Switch 2, PC, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PS4/PS5, associated with the October 2026 Switch 2 release. Older PlayStation FAQ text still says cross-generation only. Original Switch has separate GameShare or edition-downgrade conditions. This is a practical reason to date the platform matrix and prioritize current, specific publisher guidance over an older summary.
