Two-Player Skirmish Starter Sets: Is Everything Included for Both Sides?

A two-player skirmish starter should supply a supported first game for both sides, but “starter” does not always mean every component for the full competitive format. Compare the teaching game and your intended next game separately.

Use two completeness lists

The first list asks what is needed to follow the box’s introductory missions. The second asks what is needed for the current full rules, team construction and mission pack. A product can satisfy the first while needing additions for the second. Missing optional expansion content is different from a missing required component.

Category Verify for both players
Teams Exact roster, legal loadouts and enough models for the stated mode
Rules Core procedures, team rules and current updates
Mission material Objectives, cards or tokens required by the intended mission
Terrain and board Required layout, measurements and terrain interpretation
Hobby supplies Assembly method, tools, glue and paint if desired

An exact example to inspect

Games Workshop’s 2024 Kill Team Starter Set announcement describes Angels of Death and Plague Marines, push-fit figures and printed MDF terrain. The announcement also contains a correction to an earlier token-sheet image. That is a useful reminder to compare a current contents list rather than rely on a reused promotional image.

The current Kill Team downloads hub separately supplies team material and update logs. Use it to identify the rules that apply now, while keeping the starter’s teaching instructions identifiable. Do not mix a current team update with an assumed earlier rules procedure without checking compatibility.

Decide how you will grow

If both players want only the boxed experience, assess that experience on its stated contents. If the plan is to attend an event, check the event’s current mission and equipment requirements before buying. A second starter is not automatically the cheapest way to obtain missing accessories. Compare exact required additions, including terrain and rules, with what the group already owns.
