Compare a starter box with separate purchases by the cost of the complete intended experience. Unwanted models and duplicate accessories should not be counted as savings merely because they appear in a large bundle.
Define the target before comparing prices
Choose the game, edition, first mode and number of people being equipped. List what you already own. Then build a complete requirement list for assembly, optional painting and play. A bundle can be good value for two new players while being inefficient for someone who only needs one faction.
| Category | Starter-box check | Separate-purchase check |
|---|---|---|
| Models | Both wanted forces and legal starting composition? | Exact units and quantities? |
| Rules | Correct edition and complete intended mode? | Any separately required core or faction rules? |
| Table | Board, terrain and measuring aids? | Shared club equipment or new purchases? |
| Hobby | Tools, primer, paint and brush actually listed? | Only supplies required for the selected kits? |
| Storage | Can the assembled contents be kept safely? | Any additional trays or cases? |
Use contents, not broad package names
The July 2026 Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set and the one-faction Getting Started products have different purposes and inventories. The Army Painter’s paint starter is another category again. Compare exact contents rather than treating “starter” as a common specification.
For an honest price comparison, record current prices for the same region, language and product version on the same date. Add required extras and shipping where applicable. We do not supply a percentage saving here because no exact live offer comparison has been verified.
Give unwanted contents a realistic value
If you will not use the second army, assign it zero personal-use value unless a real sharing arrangement exists. Do not assume you can resell it for a particular amount. Conversely, coordinated rules and components can reduce preparation effort even if the raw miniature count is smaller. Choose the route that gets the intended people to a supported first game with a manageable hobby workload.
