Choose prepainted terrain when reducing preparation is the priority; choose unpainted terrain when customization is part of the project. In both cases, verify assembly, rules footprint and storage before buying.
Ready-painted does not always mean fully assembled
Games Workshop’s October 2026 Battlefields: Armageddon announcement describes ready-painted push-fit terrain supplied with boards and terrain footprints. Its 2024 Kill Team starter uses a different approach: printed MDF terrain that assembles and packs flat. Those are distinct products with different preparation and storage needs, even though both reduce painting work.
| Option | Preparation decision | Table-use decision |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-painted plastic | Check any remaining assembly and included components | Confirm footprint, usable floors and fit for the mission |
| Printed flat-pack terrain | Check joining method and repeated assembly instructions | Inspect stability and how printed openings function in the rules |
| Unpainted kit | Budget assembly, surface preparation and painting | Choose geometry that suits the intended game |
| Mixed collection | Decide how much visual matching matters | Agree on consistent terrain categories and boundaries |
Compare the work you actually want
If terrain painting is enjoyable, an unpainted kit offers control over colors and weathering. If the aim is to host a game soon, a prepared surface may remove a major obstacle. Neither choice guarantees a better game: useful terrain placement and clear rules interpretation still matter.
Do not assume a painted photograph shows the delivered finish. Read whether the product is supplied painted, precolored, printed, primed or bare. These terms describe different states. Check whether decorative accessories and miniatures in the photograph are included.
Plan the battlefield as a complete set
List the required terrain categories and measure their footprints before counting pieces. Include a place to store the assembled structures without rubbing their finish or bending fragile parts. For a current event layout, verify the mission pack and terrain guidance. A visually impressive bundle is useful only if it supports the games you intend to put on the table.
