Choose a capture card by the recording mode you need and the display mode you want to keep while playing. Input acceptance, passthrough and captured output are three separate specifications, and a high maximum in one column does not fill the others.
Trace the complete recording chain
The source sends video to the capture device. A passthrough port may send a signal onward to your display, while a USB connection sends captured video to a computer. The computer and recording application then encode or save it. Check all of those stages before assuming a card marked “4K” records your intended resolution and frame rate.
| Stage | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Source input | Supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and signal format |
| Passthrough | The mode your display receives while recording |
| Capture output | Resolution, frame rate, color format and HDR availability |
| Host connection | Required USB data rate and compatible port |
| Software | Supported operating system, formats and encoding settings |
| Audio | Game sound, microphone and chat routes separately |
Use the mode matrix rather than a headline
Elgato’s 4K X product and supported-mode pages show why this matters. Full performance uses a 10 Gbps USB connection, while a 5 Gbps connection has reduced capabilities. The company gives an example of passing 4K at 144 Hz while capturing 1080p at 60 frames per second. The captured file therefore need not match the display signal.
Its current documentation also distinguishes Windows HDR capture from macOS behavior and warns that software can limit available formats. The supported-mode page says Display Stream Compression capture is not supported. Consult the current matrix for the exact combination rather than combining separate “up to” claims into an unsupported mode.
Resolve conflicting specifications carefully
Manufacturer summary pages can contain broader wording than a detailed mode table. If a headline and a current compatibility matrix appear to disagree, keep the intended mode unconfirmed until the more specific documentation or support resolves it. Do not use a maximum passthrough figure as a recording promise.
Also identify whether the content can be captured through the supported input path. A capture card is not a guarantee that every application or protected signal can be recorded. Check the source device’s official capture instructions rather than assuming an ordinary video connection establishes permission or technical availability.
Plan audio and storage before purchase
Console game sound, console party chat, a PC microphone and a headset can follow different routes. Determine which tracks the recording needs and how each reaches the computer. Then check recording storage and software requirements for the chosen format. Our guide does not claim latency, image-quality or long-session reliability tests; those require hands-on measurement of the complete setup.
