CATAN Fifth vs Sixth Edition: What Can You Mix, and What Needs Checking?

English CATAN fifth- and sixth-edition products can be combined under the publisher’s current compatibility guidance, but that does not make every component or accessory identical. Check the exact boxes, card backs and required expansion chain before purchasing.

English CATAN fifth- and sixth-edition products can be combined under the publisher’s current compatibility guidance, but that does not make every component or accessory identical. Check the exact boxes, card backs and required expansion chain before purchasing.

Separate three compatibility questions

First ask whether the rules and core game components can work together. Then check whether hidden information stays hidden: visibly different card backs may reveal a card’s origin. Finally check physical accessories such as organizers, trays, frames and fitted storage. A compatible game can still need different storage.

CATAN’s official page says previous and current English editions can be used together. It flags different card backs in some combinations and points to sleeves or replacement cards. It also warns that size or design changes can affect accessories. That statement is about English editions; do not extend it automatically to every language or localized edition.

Check What to record Why it changes the purchase
Edition and language Full title, publisher, edition and box identifiers A familiar cover or seller title is not enough to identify a regional product.
Card backs Which cards mix in a hidden deck Use matching opaque backs or confirmed replacement cards when needed.
Player extension Exact base, expansion and 5–6-player requirements An expansion and its extra-player extension have different jobs.
Organizer fit Actual component and box dimensions Revised components can defeat a fitted insert.

What changed that a buyer can notice

The current compatibility page describes refreshed artwork and box sizes, slightly larger roads, purple replacing brown in additional-player pieces, and paired-player rules in 5–6-player products. The base game’s port-marker contents also changed. These are reasons to inspect the contents list, not reasons to throw away a usable collection.

Use an exact purchase chain

Write the boxes you own on one line and the intended new experience on another. For example, wanting to add players to a themed expansion may require more than the expansion’s own extra-player box. Read the “requires” statement on every candidate product and confirm both the base game and expansion prerequisites. If a seller listing combines photos from different editions, request a clear identifier or choose a listing whose identity can be established.

For an accessory, ask the maker to name the supported edition. “Fits CATAN” is weaker evidence than an exact compatibility list. Keep the edition name and product code for the copy you own with your purchase notes. Resolve the specific compatibility question before deciding whether to replace any part of the collection.
