Primer for Miniatures: Match the Product to the Material and Paint System

Choose primer by the miniature material, the application method and the paint system that will go over it. A color that looks right is only one part of the decision.

Choose primer by the miniature material, the application method and the paint system that will go over it. A color that looks right is only one part of the decision.

Separate primer from an ordinary base color

The Army Painter describes priming as preparation for paint adhesion and offers spray, brush-on and airbrush primer routes. Do not assume a normal paint bottle serves the same function merely because it is black or white. Check whether the product is actually sold for priming the material you own.

Question Why it changes the choice
What is the model made from? Compatibility must match the actual plastic, resin, metal or mixed material.
How will it be applied? Spray, brush and airbrush products have different instructions and equipment needs.
What finish comes next? Transparent or opaque paint methods may need different starting colors.
Where will you use it? Workspace and environmental instructions can rule out a convenient-looking option.
Is the model already primed? Inspect the product description before adding an unnecessary layer.

Follow the exact label

The Army Painter’s Matt White Colour Primer page specifies a spraying distance and thin-coat procedure for that product. Use those instructions rather than a universal distance copied from an unrelated can. Temperature, preparation and drying guidance belong to the chosen product; a successful result with one primer is not proof that another behaves identically.

Prepare the model according to its manufacturer, allow cleaned parts to dry and test the chosen primer on an expendable sample or inconspicuous area when appropriate. Keep layers controlled so sculpted details remain readable.

Choose a practical first workflow

If spraying is unsuitable for your workspace, investigate a compatible brush-on primer. If you already have an airbrush, verify that the primer and cleaning procedure suit it. Include the required equipment and preparation in the cost comparison. We do not promise adhesion, durability or a particular finish without testing the exact material and coating combination.
