Check remapping at three levels: the game, the console or computer, and the controller. A button swap can change which physical button sends an input without changing the game’s action prompts. A game-specific action binding can behave differently. Decide which problem you need to solve before choosing a new controller.
Start with the game’s action menu
Look for separate bindings for movement, camera, menus, combat and context-sensitive actions. Check whether an action can be unbound, whether two actions can share a button, and whether hold or repeated-press behavior has its own setting. A list of remappable keys does not prove that every action is covered.
EA’s It Takes Two PC input documentation explicitly describes changing specified keyboard movement and ability bindings. This is evidence for those keyboard actions, not a blanket claim that every controller button or platform version offers the same editing menu.
Then check the system layer
| System | Documented starting point | Scope to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Settings → Accessibility → Controllers → Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller | Select a button, assign its function and apply. Check in-game prompts afterward. |
| Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 | Button Mapping for supported Nintendo controller models | Not every physical button is remappable; Nintendo lists exclusions and supported controllers. |
| Xbox | Xbox Accessories app | The supported device and profile features matter; keyboard support also remains game dependent. |
The table follows PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox guidance. Nintendo’s FAQ excludes system functions such as power, volume, HOME and SYNC from ordinary reassignment. Verify a third-party controller by exact model rather than assuming it inherits the console’s complete mapping support.
Keep a simple test sequence
- Save the original layout or create a separate profile.
- Change one action or button, then test it in a non-competitive menu or tutorial.
- Check movement, confirmation, cancellation, pause and any required button combinations.
- Revisit on-screen prompts: they may still display the default input.
- Switch back to the original profile and verify you know how to recover it.
A controller-assistance feature can combine devices for one player. It does not necessarily create a second local player. Xbox describes Controller Assist as linking two controllers to act as one; use a separate game-mode check when the goal is multiplayer.
When a new controller is justified
Consider new hardware after identifying an input requirement the current setup cannot meet: a different button position, a supported external input, a suitable grip or a documented profile feature. Count required ports, connection modes and compatible accessories. Extra rear buttons may duplicate existing inputs rather than create additional independent game actions.
The useful purchase question is concrete: “Can this exact controller on this platform produce this required action in this game?” If any layer is undocumented, retain the uncertainty instead of treating the presence of a remap app as a complete compatibility guarantee.
