Compare the purchase model

Star Realms’ publisher describes its core set as a complete two-player deck-building game. Players acquire cards during the session from a shared system. That differs from arriving at a TCG match with a deck assembled beforehand.

Pokémon’s product guidance distinguishes fixed preconstructed decks from randomized boosters. A TCG can therefore begin with a controlled purchase; it does not require opening random packs just to try the rules.

Preference Route to inspect
One defined box for a pair A verified standalone card game
Build between sessions A TCG and format with suitable starter decks
Collect surprises Randomized products with clear set and pack identity
Expand a favorite game Exact expansion dependencies and player requirements

Standalone still needs an exact edition

Star Realms’ official pages show differing component totals for core-set descriptions. That is a reason to match the exact printing and contents rather than declare one universal card count. Its rules also say additional players need additional core copies for that particular setup. A compact box is not automatically an unlimited-group game.

Decide how you want to spend time

In-session deck building puts much of the construction into the game itself. External deck construction adds planning between meetings and may lead to specific card purchases. Collecting adds another goal again. None is inherently better; choose the activity you actually want.

Keep a complete starter setup intact while learning. Later purchases should add a desired experience, not merely increase card count. Read expansion prerequisites and format rules before mixing new material into an established game.
