Choose a travel chess set for the place where you will play as well as the bag that will carry it. Magnetic pieces, a folding case, and a small board solve different problems; none establishes that a position will survive every bump or a closed lid.
| Exact example | Published dimensions | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| House of Staunton TRV0020 | 10 × 10 inches open; 10 × 5 inches closed; 1-inch squares; 2.25-inch king | Closed thickness, total weight, and comfortable handling for your hands. |
| Yellow Mountain Imports UB-CH005-A | Board listed at 27 × 24 cm; king 5.1 cm high; set 0.4 kg | Explicit folded dimensions and square size are not supplied in the checked text. |
Packed size and playing size answer different questions
Measure the available surface after leaving room for elbows, captured pieces, and anything else on the table. Then check the complete packed dimensions against the intended bag. A listing with only two closed measurements does not establish volume. Do not calculate folded thickness from the open-board photograph.
Magnetism needs a handling check
The manufacturers describe the examples above as magnetic. We have not measured holding force or tested them in a moving vehicle. A stronger attraction may resist incidental movement, but it may also change how a person lifts a piece. Ask whether all pieces are magnetic and whether the board has a suitable storage arrangement; a magnetic clasp alone does not make the playing surface magnetic.
Recognizable pieces matter on a small board
Look at the king, queen, bishop, and pawn from the seated viewing angle. A compact king height says little about how easily neighboring pieces can be distinguished or grasped. Check the bases as well as height, and inspect whether a crowded starting position leaves room to lift a piece without disturbing others.
Do not assume folding preserves the game
The House of Staunton example provides foam storage for pieces; that is a packing feature, not evidence that a live position can remain set up when the board closes. If preserving an interrupted game matters, choose a product whose instructions explicitly support it or record the position separately.
A practical purchase decision
Choose a compact magnetic set when the available surface and carrying limit are the binding constraints. Choose a larger portable board if you mainly travel to a stationary table and prefer larger pieces. The products here illustrate verified specification differences; availability, comfort, and magnetic performance still require the exact offered item to be checked.
