Buying a Used Lawn-Game Set: A Component and Condition Checklist

Assess a used lawn-game set in three passes: identity, completeness and condition. A low price is useful only when the set supports the game you intend to play and the missing or damaged parts can be resolved.

Assess a used lawn-game set in three passes: identity, completeness and condition. A low price is useful only when the set supports the game you intend to play and the missing or damaged parts can be resolved.

Identify the model first

Ask for the maker, model number and photographs of the actual kit. Compare them with the manufacturer’s current or archived manual for that model. A newer product with a similar name may have different connectors, dimensions or replacement parts. Do not assume a generic listing title identifies the edition.

Count against a named inventory

Game example Inventory check Small omission that matters
Kubb King, ten kubbs, six batons and the required markers. A missing king or a mixed-size replacement changes the kit.
Mölkky Twelve numbered pins and a throwing skittle. Check every number; twelve loose pins could still contain a duplicate.
Franklin Intermediate 50201X croquet Six balls and mallets, nine wickets and two stakes. Confirm mallet heads, shafts and connections are all present.
GoSports LT-02 ladder toss Two complete targets, six bolos, trackers and case. A missing connector can prevent a target from standing as designed.

Use the Kubb rules inventory, Mölkky publisher listing, Franklin model page and GoSports model page as examples. They do not establish the contents of every product sold under those game names.

Inspect the full assembly

  • Lay out every part and compare it with the model’s instructions.
  • Check joints, supports, fasteners and locking pieces.
  • Inspect wood for splits, sharp damage and changes that affect fit.
  • Inspect plastic and metal parts for cracks, distortion or damage.
  • Check balls, bags, ropes and nets for functional wear.
  • Confirm the carrying case closes with all required components inside.

Cosmetic wear and structural damage are different, but a photograph may not establish which you are seeing. Do not declare a resin ball indestructible, a bowed board repairable, or a split baton harmless without appropriate evidence. If the structure cannot be assessed confidently, leave the purchase unresolved.

Price the missing parts before buying

Check whether the maker actually offers the exact replacement, whether it is available in your region and whether its dimensions match the used kit. A product’s continued sale does not guarantee spare-part availability. Do not promise a repair by substituting a similar-looking component from another brand.

Add the cost and practical effort of replacements, cleaning and transport to the asking price. Avoid treating an incomplete used bundle as equivalent to a complete new set. If the aim is formal play, verify the equipment dimensions and accepted rules as well as basic usability.

Ask about storage without assuming the answer

A carry bag is not proof that the set was kept dry. Ask how it was stored and inspect it yourself where possible. The ACA care guide illustrates the importance of product-specific board and bag storage; use the exact maker’s instructions for the item you receive.

Keep the seller’s description and the agreed return or inspection terms. The goal is a complete, identifiable and assessable kit, not a remote condition guarantee based on a few listing photographs.
