For five or six people, buy the player extension for the exact version of CATAN you want to play. Adding Seafarers is a different purchase from adding players.
The two shopping lists
The base-game page says its 5–6-player product adds players to the base game. For Seafarers with five or six, the official Seafarers page lists four boxes: the base game, its 5–6-player expansion, Seafarers, and Seafarers’ 5–6-player expansion. Buying only the final box leaves missing components.

Check your shelves first
Write down each owned box’s full title, edition and language. Mark its role in the table. Seller descriptions sometimes use expansion and extension inconsistently, so read actual prerequisites. Do not let the presence of extra colored pieces convince you a different expansion is complete.
Edition fit is a separate question
CATAN’s English-edition compatibility guidance permits combining previous and current editions, with qualifications for card backs and accessories. That does not make an expansion standalone or supply missing components. First complete the dependency list, then resolve differences between editions.
Current additional-player products use paired-player procedures. Read the correct rules before teaching, especially if your older instructions describe a different sequence. Keep the box identities in your purchase notes so future accessories can be checked against the collection you actually own.
