Five people fit many party games, but the arrangement matters as much as the number on the box. Decide whether you want one cooperative group, individual decisions, or opposing teams before comparing titles.
| Candidate | Published player range | What five people do |
|---|---|---|
| Just One | 3–7 | One active guesser receives clues from the others. |
| So Clover! | 3–6 | Players create clues, then work through each other’s puzzles. |
| Sushi Go! | 2–5 | Everyone makes private card choices and competes individually. |
| Codenames, 2025 edition | 4–8+ | Two spymasters leave three people to divide between the guessing teams. |
An odd number need not mean an odd person out
A shared puzzle or individual scoring structure avoids the need for equally sized teams. In a two-team game with specialized roles, count those roles first. Five total people in Codenames does not mean two full teams of identical composition. Unequal guessing teams are a different experience; we have not measured whether your particular players would find them balanced.
Compare attention, not just activity
Ask what each person can contribute while someone else is active. Private clue writing, open discussion, and simultaneous selection distribute attention differently. A person may have a decision available yet still feel rushed by the others. Avoid promising that simultaneous play eliminates waiting or that cooperation guarantees equal influence.
Use the actual five-player setup
Check cards per hand, materials per person, and how the opening role is chosen. Teach one complete turn, including how scoring works. Spare pieces are not an invitation to invent an extra role. If you deliberately rotate roles or adjust teams between games, tell the group what is changing.
Choose for the conversation you want
Start with Just One if the appeal is interpreting concise clues, with So Clover! if the group enjoys explaining connections afterward, or with Sushi Go! if you want social table talk around individual choices. Choose Codenames when the group wants team discussion and is comfortable with the uneven division of guessers. These are conditional suggestions from the rules, not a ranking based on tested five-player sessions.
Check the box before buying
Match the edition, language, age guidance, and component list to the product you intend. A larger edition is useful only if you need its different range or content. For a regular five-person group, a game that fits the existing table and preferences is a better target than the largest possible player maximum.
