A game can offer subtitles without letting you enlarge its menu text, and a larger subtitle setting does not automatically include captions for important sounds. Start with the specific information you need to read, then check the exact platform’s accessibility documentation.
Two documented starting points
God of War Ragnarök’s official PlayStation accessibility guide separates interface text size from subtitle and caption size. It also documents speaker names, caption backgrounds and direction indicators. That makes it a useful candidate to investigate when several kinds of on-screen information matter; it is not a guarantee that every interface element can be enlarged.
EA’s Apex Legends PC guide describes subtitle sizing and separate accessible-chat options. The source is explicitly for PC. Check the matching documentation before assuming the same menus, input method or feature coverage on a console.
Compare the settings that solve your problem
| Need | Setting to verify | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Read spoken dialogue | Subtitle size and background | Can you enable it before the opening scene? |
| Identify the speaker | Names or other speaker identification | Does the distinction still work without relying on color alone? |
| Notice non-speech events | Sound-effect captions and direction cues | Which gameplay sounds are actually included? |
| Read menus and inventory | UI text size or interface scaling | Does the setting cover every essential screen? |
| Read player communication | Text chat, transcription or narration | Is this separate from scripted dialogue? |
Match the evidence to your display
An accessibility feature list establishes that an option exists; it does not establish that it is comfortable from your sofa. When an official settings video or demo is available, inspect the largest relevant setting at the distance and display size you intend to use. Avoid using a close-up promotional screenshot as a substitute for that check.
Record your platform, game version, screen size, viewing distance and the settings you examined. If you have not tried the game, label your conclusion as a documentation-based shortlist. This guide does not claim a tested minimum screen size or universal readability threshold.
Do not confuse console text with game text
PS5 accessibility settings include console text and display controls as well as a way to inspect a game’s listed accessibility features. Treat console menus and a game’s own interface as separate checks. Zoom may help inspect an area while changing how much of the scene is visible; it is not automatically a replacement for an in-game text-size option.
Before choosing a game
- Confirm the language you need has the documented subtitles or captions.
- Check gameplay, menus, cutscenes and multiplayer communication separately.
- Look for a reset option and whether settings are saved per user.
- If a must-have setting is not documented, request a demonstration or try a supported demo before purchasing.
A short, precise list of required settings is more useful than an undifferentiated “accessible” badge. Use it to rule out unsuitable versions and to ask the publisher a question that can be answered clearly.
