Use the current store or installer requirement to plan storage, then check the destination drive’s free space. A download figure describes data transferred; an installed-size figure describes files kept on the device. Treat them as separate measurements and do not assume a fixed ratio between them.
Record the numbers with their scope

Use the device’s own storage view
PlayStation’s PS5 storage guide points to Settings → Storage and distinguishes game data from saved data and captures. Check the category before removing anything. Freeing an installed game and deleting its saved progress are different actions; do not treat every storage item as disposable.
Valve’s download-management guide documents moving installed games between Steam library locations. This may help when another compatible drive already has space. Confirm the destination library and available capacity instead of assuming a second drive is automatically selected for an update.
Storage space is not the same as playable storage
PlayStation’s USB extended-storage guidance allows PS5 game data to be moved to USB storage but requires copying it back to console or suitable M.2 storage to play. It treats PS4 games differently. A larger USB drive can therefore help archive PS5 games without becoming the place those games run.
Likewise, check the exact storage standard required by your own platform before buying a card or drive. Capacity alone does not establish speed, interface, enclosure, physical-fit or software compatibility. A product described broadly as “gaming storage” still needs to match the device’s requirements.
A worked planning example
Suppose your destination has 180 GB free and the installer currently requests 120 GB. The arithmetic leaves 60 GB, before any additional pack or later requirement. That is a planning remainder, not a universal safe update allowance. If the updater later requests more temporary room, follow its current message rather than relying on this example.
For a limited connection, record whether the download is the whole game, a patch, a language pack or an optional high-resolution asset pack. Schedule enough time for installation as well as transfer. We have not measured any game’s download duration or compression ratio here.
Before purchasing extra storage
- Check current free space and installed items.
- Read the exact game edition’s present requirement.
- Identify optional packs you actually want.
- Verify whether the proposed drive can run the game or only store it.
- Keep a separate backup or sync plan for progress where the platform supports one.
Choose expansion hardware only after this check shows a real capacity or compatibility gap. A physical copy may still need installation and additional downloads, so the box format is not a substitute for the storage requirement.
