Read a restriction list for the exact game, format and effective date. Then check card names and quantities across every deck area the rules count. A card being sold is not evidence it is legal for your event.
Start with scope
Wizards organizes banned and restricted information by format: a card’s status in one format does not automatically transfer to another. Konami distinguishes Forbidden, Limited and Semi-Limited cards and explains how limits apply across the relevant deck areas. Read those definitions before scanning for familiar names.
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Format | Selects the correct list |
| Effective date | Determines which version applies at the event |
| Exact card name | Avoids confusing similarly named cards |
| Quantity rule | May count multiple deck areas together |
| Errata or reprint rule | Can affect how an older printing is used |
Do not confuse rotation with a ban
Pokémon’s Standard eligibility uses regulation marks and reprint exceptions as described in its official resources. A rotating card is not necessarily a banned card in every other format. Check both the allowed card pool and any separate exclusions.
An announcement can describe a future change while a current list still applies today. Record the event date next to the effective date instead of treating the newest headline as automatically active.
Apply the check to a written deck list
Count all copies before buying an additional one. If a restriction makes the planned deck invalid, decide whether a legal replacement still serves the intended strategy before purchasing the rest. Recheck shortly before the event.
For unresolved names, printings or policy questions, use the official rules resources and organizer. Do not rely on a seller’s “tournament ready” label as a substitute for the list you will actually be playing under.
