Before adding a unit to a wargame army, verify that its current rules support the exact role you want. A matching faction name and an attractive miniature are necessary clues, not a complete legality check.
Build a five-field purchase record
Record the game and edition, faction, intended mode, exact unit name and rules source. Then add the date of the points or army-building document. This makes it possible to distinguish a collector purchase from a unit intended for a specific event list.
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Current rules | Is the unit supported in the agreed edition and mode? |
| Force construction | Does it fit the relevant detachment, formation or roster restrictions? |
| Quantity | How many models form the legal unit, and how many does the box contain? |
| Equipment | Can the kit build the loadout you intend to field? |
| Representation | Do bases, weapons and model identity meet the event or group requirements? |
Rules can change after the box is printed
Warhammer 40,000’s current downloads hub provides faction material, universal updates and a dated Munitorum Field Manual. Warlord’s Bolt Action Third Edition FAQ page, checked November 2, 2026, lists a September 24, 2026 update and separates errata for different army books. These are reasons to check current sources rather than treat a printed profile or old shopping guide as permanent.
Do not publish a points value without its version and context. A points change can alter whether a unit fits a list even when the physical model remains useful.
Check assembly options before commitment
Read the sprue or contents description and assembly instructions before permanently attaching an optional weapon. A product photograph may show an alternative build rather than an additional model. If a desired option is unclear, resolve that uncertainty before buying several boxes. Build a modest expansion that fills a known role, then reassess after play instead of assuming every new unit improves every force.
