Choose a mahjong set for the rules your group plays. American and Chinese sets can look similar while including different tiles and accessories. A large advertised tile count may include spare tiles that are not part of normal play.
Ask the group which rules it uses
Yellow Mountain Imports’ American guide describes 152 tiles in play, including eight jokers, and use of a National Mah Jongg League hands-and-rules card. Its Chinese guide describes 144 playable tiles, including flowers and seasons, with some groups omitting those bonus tiles. “Chinese mahjong” still covers different local and competition rules, so ask the group rather than choosing from the label alone.
| Check | American purchase | Chinese purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Jokers | Confirm the required jokers are included | Do not assume a standard set includes jokers. |
| Rules reference | Check the current card and chosen organization’s rules | Name the actual variant and scoring rules. |
| Spare tiles | Separate them from tiles used in play | Separate blank replacements from the playing set. |
| Accessories | Racks, pushers and card storage may be useful | Check dice, indicators and the group’s preferred setup. |
Why a 166-tile box does not mean a 166-tile game
The manufacturer’s “Classic” American tiles-only set contains 166 tiles, including extra flowers, jokers and blank spares. Its American rules explain that 152 are used for normal play. The same product explicitly excludes racks and other accessories. A buyer comparing only the tile total could mistake it for a complete table kit.
Check physical usability
Compare tile dimensions, the clarity of numbers and letters, and whether the intended players prefer racks or standing tiles. Inspect the actual engraving style rather than assuming all decorative sets use familiar symbols. Measure the table layout, including walls, racks and discard area. A portable case measurement does not establish the playing footprint.
Buy a gift by asking one precise question
Ask, “Which mahjong rules and card does your group use?” That is more useful than asking whether the recipient likes mahjong. Then match the tile inventory and accessories. If converting a set for another variant, verify the required flowers, jokers and markings; removing or adding a few tiles is not automatically sufficient for every scoring system.
Keep the full component list with the set so a future owner can distinguish a missing playing tile from an unused spare.
