Count the ready-to-play decks and identify the teaching format. Disney Lorcana Gateway, a historical single starter deck and the newer two-player starter set have different contents despite sharing beginner-friendly names.
Three products that should not be confused
The official Gateway page lists two thirty-card starting decks, four reward packs, a board and teaching guides. Those smaller starting decks belong to its staged learning experience.
The official First Chapter page describes a single sixty-card starter deck with tokens, rules and a booster. The newer two-player starter-set page lists two sixty-card decks, storage boxes, tokens, lore trackers and a rulebook. Read the exact set name and contents rather than applying an older starter description to a new package.
| Product role | Initial supplied decks | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway teaching sequence | Two thirty-card starting decks plus reward packs | Follow the guided progression |
| Historical single starter deck | One sixty-card deck | Opponent needs another deck |
| Two-player starter set | Two sixty-card decks | Inspect exact themes, language and included aids |
Match the learner and opponent
For two people learning together, a product that explicitly equips both avoids an unnecessary second purchase. For someone joining an established player, one appropriate deck may be enough. A named character on the cover can suggest a theme, but it does not describe the whole deck or guarantee a particular play preference.
Check format and edition before expanding
Starter suitability is not a perpetual tournament-legality claim. Verify current organized-play rules and the actual card list before taking a deck to an event. Keep fixed starter contents separate from randomized booster contents.
For a retailer offer, match the package to the official product page, including the region and language. This comparison uses the linked official US and UK product descriptions; availability and regional packaging must be verified for the actual purchase.
