Electronic Chess Board vs a Standard Set: What Functions Are Included?

An electronic chessboard may connect to another device, contain its own opponent, record moves, or combine some of those functions. Identify the required function first; the word electronic does not establish that every feature is built in.

Connected and standalone are different purchases

Centaur includes its own computer, rechargeable battery, and move-indication lights. Pegasus uses a mobile Bluetooth connection for its digital workflows. Choose the former type when a self-contained computer opponent is the goal; inspect the latter type when playing through a supported service is the reason for the purchase.

Check the exact workflow

For a connected board, verify the phone operating system, current app, chosen platform, account requirements, and features you intend to use. A statement that a platform is supported does not establish that every feature or third-party app behaves identically. We have not tested every connection or subscription tier.

Read ports and accessory compatibility carefully

DGT’s Pegasus FAQ says its USB-C port is for charging, not a wired substitute for Bluetooth, and that DGT3000 and DGT Pi cannot connect to Pegasus. These are useful examples of why a matching brand name or physical connector does not establish compatibility.

Separate offline recording from an offline opponent

The Pegasus documentation describes an offline game-recorder option against another person. That is not the same as an onboard computer you can challenge without an external engine. Ask exactly what offline means in the advertised feature: sensing moves, saving notation, or generating an opponent’s moves.

Include the physical board

Electronics do not remove the need for comfortable squares, readable pieces, storage, and a suitable table. Centaur’s listed overall board dimensions are 44 × 40 × 1 cm; Pegasus is a different model with its own dimensions. Do not use a packaging measurement as the playing footprint.

Choose the smallest system that meets the goal

A standard set can be the best fit for two people who simply want to play together. A standalone computer suits a specific desire for an integrated opponent. A connected board suits a verified online or recording workflow. The comparison is about included functions, not a tested ranking of playing strength or educational benefit.
