Before buying an at-home escape game, check four things: how many people can participate, whether an app is required, whether components are changed permanently, and whether you expect to pass the game to another group afterward.
Two distinct purchase models
KOSMOS describes EXIT: The Game as a one-time experience involving writing, folding or cutting materials. That physical alteration is part of the puzzle design. Buying it with the expectation of an untouched reusable box creates the wrong comparison.
The standard Unlock! series uses cards and a companion app. Space Cowboys lists its main format for one to six players, ages ten and up, with roughly hour-long adventures. The Extraordinary Adventures rules explicitly require the app and say internet is not needed during play after downloading it. Do not assume every product bearing a related series name uses identical requirements.
| Decision | EXIT example | Unlock! example |
|---|---|---|
| Physical changes | Publisher describes altering materials | Inspect the chosen scenario’s component instructions. |
| Device requirement | Check exact title; series features can differ | Required app in the cited Extraordinary Adventures rules. |
| Sharing afterward | Changed materials can prevent a fresh playthrough | Check completeness and avoid spoilers; knowing solutions still changes replay. |
| Before game night | Read setup without opening solution material | Install the correct app and verify the adventure and sound. |
Distinguish replay from reuse
Replay asks whether the same people can have a fresh experience. Reuse asks whether another group can play with the remaining materials. An intact mystery may be reusable while offering little surprise to someone who already knows the answers. A consumable mystery can be satisfying value for one evening without being reusable. Compare those experiences honestly.
Plan for real participation
A maximum player count does not guarantee equal access to every small card. Put shared evidence where everyone can inspect it and take turns with the device. Agree how to use hints before frustration builds. The goal is a shared puzzle night, not a competition over who can keep clues to themselves.
Be careful with used copies
Ask whether anything has been cut, folded, written on, opened irreversibly or removed. Verify the exact component inventory without spoiling the puzzles. For an app-led game, confirm that the necessary app and adventure are available on your device now. A box in good physical condition is insufficient if the required digital component cannot be used.
