Use an official quick-start to evaluate a game’s actual procedure before buying its full rules. The key question is whether the sample demonstrates the kind of play you want, and what it leaves out.
Verify the sample’s identity
Check publisher, edition and revision date. A free introductory file can remain online after a game changes, and an older sample may still be useful if you identify it correctly. Avoid judging a current product from an unrelated earlier edition or an unofficial summary that omits necessary steps.
| Inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Characters | Premade characters may skip the character-creation experience. |
| Resolution | Play through both a success and a setback. |
| Adventure | Notice whether the sample emphasizes the activities your group wants. |
| GM support | Check whether rules, opponents and answers are actually included. |
| Expansion path | Identify which full book adds the missing material you care about. |
Distinguish a sample from a complete free game
Chaosium offers a Call of Cthulhu quick-start with introductory play material. D&D provides free rules as an entry to its wider rules collection. Ironsworn’s publisher describes its free digital edition as containing everything needed to play. These are different offers: “free” does not necessarily mean a limited demo, and “quick-start” does not promise every character or campaign option.
Keep a short evaluation note after the session: one procedure everyone understood, one confusing rule and one desired activity the sample did not cover. That creates a useful question for the full book’s table of contents.
Buy the missing function
If the sample works but you need more character choices, look for those choices. If the obstacle is running investigations or preparing encounters, inspect the GM guidance. Buying a larger book will not necessarily fix a mismatch in tone or decision style. It may be better to try another official starter. No purchase is required merely because a free session was enjoyable.
