Consider the Dragonbane Core Set if you want rules, adventures, dice and table aids in one fantasy role-playing box. Players describe what their characters try to do and use the rules to resolve uncertain results. The set supports a group led by a gamemaster and also includes a separate booklet for solo play.

Exact product and format

This guide concerns Free League Publishing’s English Dragonbane Core Set, publisher SKU FLFDGB001, ISBN 9789189143876. It is a physical boxed product. The publisher describes Dragonbane for one to six players; there is no verified fixed session length in this guide.

Age guidance differs by source: Free League’s game page says 12+, while the checked Amazon listing title says 13+. The publisher’s 12+ recommendation is the source of that figure here, not a guarantee that the rules, reading or fantasy content suit every household.

What you receive

The box contains a rulebook; an adventure book with 11 adventures; the Alone in Deepfall Breach solo booklet; a map of the Misty Vale; illustrated playing cards; ten polyhedral dice, including two custom D20s; five pregenerated characters; five blank character sheets; cardboard standees; and a double-sided battle mat.

The rulebook uses a D20 system—a twenty-sided die is part of resolving actions. The supplied adventures and characters provide material to begin with, but the person running a group session still needs to read and prepare the relevant rules and adventure. This guide does not claim a measured preparation time or that a particular group will find the system easy.

Separate the box from other Dragonbane purchases

The standalone hardcover Dragonbane Rulebook is a different item. Free League states that the Core Set includes a softback rules version, while the hardcover includes an introductory adventure that is not part of that softback book. Compare the whole boxed contents with the single-book purchase before deciding.

Likewise, a downloadable PDF or a virtual-tabletop module is a different format. Free League advertises a PDF with purchases from its own store, but that does not establish a digital entitlement for the Amazon listing. No PDF or virtual-tabletop access is promised by this guide.

Who should compare another option?

If your existing group has already chosen another RPG system, confirm that it wants to change before buying a new core set. Shared fantasy terminology does not make rulebooks or adventures interchangeable. If you already own Dragonbane’s rules and dice, compare the included adventure and play-aid material with the specific expansion or book you actually need.

Common questions

Can I use it alone?

The included Alone in Deepfall Breach booklet specifically provides a solo route without a gamemaster.

Are miniatures an additional required purchase?

The publisher supplies cardboard standees and a battle mat in this set. The contents should not be confused with a box of plastic miniatures.
