Choose sorting trays by usable sorting area and the way they close or stack. A claim that a set holds a certain number of pieces does not tell you whether those pieces can lie in a single visible layer, whether large pieces fit comfortably, or how tall the loaded stack will be.
Compare the actual tray system
Ravensburger Puzzle Sort & Go 12001674 specifies eight stacking trays and a capacity claim of up to 1,000 pieces. White Mountain’s plastic Puzzle Sorting Trays contains six stacking trays. The different counts give you different numbers of sorting groups; they do not, by themselves, establish which set offers more usable area.
An exact product identity matters here. Older similarly named systems, cardboard boxes and newer plastic trays can have different shapes and quantities. Match the manufacturer item number and material before transferring a specification from one listing to another.
| Check | Why it changes use |
|---|---|
| Usable interior width and length | Outer dimensions include walls and shaped tabs that may not hold flat pieces. |
| Clearance between stacked trays | Loaded pieces must fit without pressure from the tray above. |
| Open edges and lids | Easy pouring and secure carrying are different features. |
| Loaded stack height | The stack must fit the shelf, drawer or storage space you plan to use. |
| Number of independent trays | More groups can help your sorting method, but need room when spread out. |
Separate storage capacity from visibility
A deep pile can contain many pieces while hiding most of their images. A single layer makes the pictures easier to scan but needs more area. Decide which job you are buying for: storing piles between sessions or keeping sorted groups visible while working.
For a simple estimate, compare a tray’s usable rectangle with a representative piece from the exact puzzle. That is not a guaranteed piece capacity: irregular shapes leave gaps, and a large-piece cut may use the same advertised puzzle count while occupying more space. Avoid multiplying a marketing count into a precision claim.
Plan the layout when the trays are open
Measure the space beside your puzzle board as well as the storage location. Six small trays can be arranged around two people; a single broad drawer may be accessible from only one side. Consider whether you will need to pick up a tray to reach pieces at its far edge.
The Ravensburger product describes an open edge for moving pieces out and diagonal stacking. Those features do not establish that the set is a sealed travel container. If you intend to carry it vertically or in a bag, seek an explicit closure and orientation instruction instead of relying on the word stackable.
Choose the simplest system that fits
For a small workspace, start with the number of sorting groups you actually use: border, several image regions and perhaps uncertain pieces. A larger tray count is useful only when you can store and handle the whole set.
Before buying, record the exact product, count, material, usable dimensions if stated and loaded storage height if stated. Mark missing measurements as unknown. That short list is more dependable than choosing the highest piece-capacity number on a listing.
