Slate vs Other Pool-Table Beds: Installation, Weight, and Maintenance

Compare pool-table beds by the exact construction and installation plan. Slate and non-slate descriptions tell you something about the playing surface, but weight, leveling and service requirements still depend on the model.

Read the bed specification separately from the cabinet

A table can have a wood cabinet and a slate bed, or a wood-based playing surface with a decorative finish. Look for the material, thickness, number of sections, supporting frame and cloth installation. Do not infer the bed from a product photograph or from the word “professional” in a listing.

Check Why it matters
Bed material and sections Determines the relevant installation procedure
Total and component weights Affects delivery, handling and the route into the room
Cloth state Already fitted or installed during assembly?
Leveling method Identify legs, shims or other model-specific adjustments
Service and warranty Check who is authorized to install or move it

Two documented construction examples

Playcraft’s Glacier seven-foot table uses an 18 mm MDF playfield with a PVC resin layer and arrives with cloth already fitted. Its Copenhagen slate-table manual instead lists separate left, center and right slate sections. These are useful examples of different installation tasks; they do not prove every non-slate table is light or every slate table uses three sections.

Brunswick’s warranty page also ties its billiard-table coverage to authorized installation and servicing. That is a brand-specific condition to verify for the purchase you are considering, not a universal rule for all pool tables.

Budget installation as part of the purchase

Ask for the complete delivery and assembly scope, including stairs, room access, leveling and disposal of packaging. Confirm what happens if the table must later move. For a used table, identify whether the cloth and bed can be transported as instructed and what professional setup will cost. Avoid treating a low advertised table price as the total installed cost. We do not claim measured ball-roll or long-term durability differences without testing the exact constructions.
