Preparing to run a game means giving players a situation they can understand and meaningfully affect. Focus first on what they can discover, what choices matter, and what information you need to adjudicate those choices.

What to compare

Prepare situations

Write down the immediate problem, important people, and consequences. Leave room for choices you did not predict rather than scripting every player action.

Useful references

Keep the rules and statistics likely to arise close at hand. Separate essential session notes from background detail you can consult later.

A workable table

Agree on tone, boundaries, attendance, breaks, and how rules questions will be handled. Encourage contributions without requiring every player to perform in the same way.

A detail worth checking

Extra props and elaborate maps are optional. They should support decisions and understanding rather than consume preparation time needed for the basic session.

Make your next session easier

Prepare the opening scene, a few clear leads, and a short ending or pause point. After the session, ask what players wanted more or less of before expanding your preparation.
