Tabletop game character sheets, cards and dice

Choose an RPG system around the kind of story and decisions your group wants. A rules-light conversation, tactical expedition, mystery, and long character campaign each ask for different preparation and player attention.

What to compare

Who creates the story

Check whether one game master prepares the situation, players share that role, or prompts guide the session. Understand what each person must bring.

Resolution and complexity

Read an example of how an uncertain action is resolved. Consider the amount of arithmetic, reference material, and tactical detail the group enjoys.

Complete play materials

Check required dice, cards, character sheets, digital tools, and companion books. A short rules text may still expect separate adventure preparation.

A detail worth checking

Fewer pages do not automatically mean easier play, and more detailed rules do not automatically create a better campaign. Match the support and structure to your group.

Make your next session easier

Read an official quickstart or sample where available, explain the premise to the group, and try a short self-contained session before purchasing a larger collection.
