For travel backgammon, compare the complete packed set with its open playing arrangement. Magnetic, folding, and roll-up are overlapping features: a folding case can have magnetic checkers, while another may use magnets only to hold the case shut.
| Exact example | Verified format and dimensions | Handling detail |
|---|---|---|
| YMI Izmir HZ-BG005-A | Folding magnetic set; 35.5 × 23.5 × 2.5 cm open | Magnetic checkers listed at 18 × 5 mm. |
| Sondergut Mocha roll-up | 10 × 2 inches rolled; 10 × 12.5 inches open | Checkers listed at 2 cm diameter; zippered component pocket. |
| YMI Pasadena 15-inch | Wooden folding case; 38.5 × 24 × 4.5 cm closed | 28 × 8 mm acrylic checkers; closure magnets are described. |
Read open and closed labels literally
The table deliberately keeps the measurement context attached to each figure. The Izmir open size cannot be compared directly with the Pasadena closed size to decide which needs less table space. Obtain the missing dimension for the decision that matters, rather than completing the table with an invented estimate.
Magnetic pieces do not control dice
A magnetic checker system may address incidental piece movement, but it does not establish dice containment or suitability for every moving vehicle. We have not tested magnet strength, vibration, or rolling behavior. Consider whether the actual playing location allows a stable surface and a reasonable place to roll.
A roll-up set needs a supporting surface
The Sondergut format reduces packed bulk by rolling the playing surface. You still need a table or other appropriate flat support. Check how the surface lies after storage and where the loose pieces are kept. Do not confuse an attractive compact roll with a self-supporting board.
Check the accessory tradeoff
The Izmir and Pasadena listings include dice cups as well as dice and a doubling cube. The checked Sondergut page describes dice, a cube, and two sets of fifteen checkers in its pocket, but does not list cups. Confirm the exact contents if cups are part of the setup you want rather than assuming every travel set supplies them.
Use checker size as a separate choice
Smaller checkers save room but may not suit every player’s grip or eyesight. Larger checkers require a compatible point layout and storage space. Try the repeated actions if possible: moving a stack, picking up one piece, rolling, and packing everything away.
Choose for the journey you actually take
For minimal packed bulk, examine a verified roll-up set. For a compact attached playing arrangement, examine a magnetic folding model. For travel to a stationary table, a larger case may be acceptable. None of these formats automatically earns a stability or durability rating from its description.
