Compare a backgammon set by the size of its usable board and checkers, then verify the complete accessory inventory. A nominal case size such as fifteen or nineteen inches does not describe every dimension you need.
| Yellow Mountain Imports example | Closed case | Checker diameter and thickness | Listed set weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pasadena 15-inch, US-BG009-A | 38.5 × 24 × 4.5 cm | 28 × 8 mm | 0.96 kg |
| Pasadena 19-inch, US-BG009L19-A | 49 × 28.9 × 5 cm | 35 × 8 mm | 1.6 kg |
Use the dimensions for the right purpose
These are manufacturer-listed closed case measurements, not measured table footprints. Both cases unfold. Request or measure the open dimensions before choosing for a small table. The larger checkers may appeal to someone who wants more surface to grasp, but we have not tested which set is more comfortable for a particular player.
Check what complete means
The US Backgammon Federation describes fifteen checkers per player, dice and cups, and a doubling cube as the basic equipment. Both Pasadena listings specify thirty checkers, four dice, a cube, and two cups. Count those items separately when examining a used set; an attractive case can still be missing an essential part of the intended setup.
Inspect the playing surface without inventing a performance score
The examples use inlaid wooden playing areas. That identifies construction, not measured noise, friction, or dice behavior. Look for a flat surface, legible contrast between points and checkers, and transitions that do not obstruct movement. If sound is important, try the actual set in the setting where it will be used.
Check trays and closure
Make sure the checkers and cups can be stored without forcing the case shut. Confirm that any replacement checker matches both the playing area and the storage compartment. A magnet used to close a case does not establish that its checkers stay attached to the board during play.
Choose the tradeoff you actually need
For regular home play, prioritize comfortable component handling and a table layout that leaves room for rolling. For frequent carrying, include the whole packed weight and case dimensions. A larger set is not automatically a tournament requirement, and a travel label does not certify convenient play on every small surface.
Make the listing specific
Match the model code, checker dimensions, accessory list, and case measurements. Do not transfer the nineteen-inch model’s specifications to the fifteen-inch version because the photographs or product-family names look alike.
