Compare the actual jobs of the boxes

Heroes of the Borderlands uses physical play aids and guided adventures. Wizards’ public-play guidance caps it at four character players plus one Dungeon Master. Its store describes a three-to-five-person group overall. Do not count the DM twice when checking your group.

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle supplies premade characters and an introductory adventure for levels 1–3. The official product page lists one DM and one to five player characters, with four to five characters described as its preferred range. The Essentials Kit instead includes character-creation support and the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure; its legacy status should be clear if your goal is learning the newest rules.

Keep physical and digital contents separate

A physical box, a digital adventure and a combined bundle can share a name while delivering different things. Do not assume a printed purchase unlocks every digital book or tool. Compare the exact offer’s list and retain any code until you understand what it grants. Used kits need a component inventory and an honest check of already-redeemed codes.

Match the first evening to the product

Pick the DM before ordering and let that person read the opening guidance. If the players want to make characters, choose a product that supports that process or allow additional preparation. If they want to start quickly, premade or guided character choices may remove decisions at the beginning. These are workflow preferences, not a claim that one starter is universally better.

A starter need not become a large shopping list

Use the supplied introductory rules for the included adventure. Add books, minis, maps or extra dice only when a specific need appears. Before carrying characters or adventures into a different rules generation, check the relevant official compatibility guidance rather than assuming every similarly titled rule is unchanged.
