D&D 2014 and 2024 Books: How to Check Compatibility Before Buying

Before buying another D&D book, identify the rules your group uses and the specific material you want from the purchase. An older adventure, an older subclass and an online character-builder option raise different compatibility questions.

Understand the current labels

A March 2, 2026 note on D&D Beyond says its 2024 rules content is now labeled 5.5e and its 2014 content 5e. Wizards describes this as a clarity change rather than a new change to rules or purchases. Record both the book’s publication version and the platform label so a retailer’s broad “fifth edition” title does not hide the distinction.

What you want to use What to confirm
An older adventure The DM’s chosen core rules, referenced monsters and any conversion choices
A class or subclass The exact class version and whether the desired subclass was revised
A spell or item Which version the table and digital sheet will use
An online tool option Owned entitlement, enabled sources and current builder support

Compatibility has specific limits

Wizards’ compatibility FAQ says existing adventures and supplements can work with the 2024 core books. That broad statement is not permission to combine every version of every character feature. D&D Beyond’s changelog documents specific builder rules: for example, a subclass revised in the 2024 Player’s Handbook is not offered in its older form with the 2024 class.

For a purchase driven by one character concept, ask the DM to confirm that exact combination. Open the product contents and check the named option rather than buying a book because a search result calls it compatible. A table agreement and a platform’s implemented options are related but separate checks.

Keep a small compatibility record

Write down core rules year, permitted sourcebooks, character-class version and any agreed exceptions. If continuing an existing campaign, decide whether to convert everyone together or retain current characters. Do not assume a new purchase invalidates books you already use; equally, do not promise that every mixed combination requires no adjustment.
