For two people learning a new TCG, verify that the purchase equips both players. A box labeled starter can contain one deck, two decks or a staged tutorial whose smaller decks grow during learning.
Count complete roles, not cards
A large card total may be a collection for building decks rather than ready-to-play material. Count the playable decks, required markers and rules aids. Then ask whether the two supplied decks are intended to learn against each other.
| Documented example | What the box provides | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Battle Academy 2024 | Three complete sixty-card decks and teaching materials | Three simultaneous players |
| Lorcana Gateway | Two smaller starting decks and staged reward packs | Ordinary full-size tournament decks from the first step |
| Magic Foundations Beginner Box | Predetermined themed packs and tutorial guides | The same purpose as the Starter Collection |
Preserve the tutorial order
Some teaching products deliberately order their cards or introduce rules in stages. Wizards explicitly says the Foundations tutorial decks should not be shuffled before following the lesson. Read setup before treating every sealed pack like a random booster. If the order is lost, use the publisher’s restoration information where available.
Plan the second session
After the lesson, check whether the box supports ordinary repeated matches, deck changes or only a narrower introductory experience. Decide whether that is enough for your goal. A teaching box can be worthwhile without supplying an entire competitive collection.
For each retailer offer, match the exact version and language to the official contents. If one player already owns a deck, a smaller purchase might suffice; if both are new, do not discover at the table that the second deck was sold separately.
