An adventure book provides a situation to run; it may not provide every rule, character option or creature needed to run it. Build a dependency list from the exact book before buying supporting material.
Read the introduction and references first
Check the intended character levels, suggested group size, rules version and any “using this book” instructions. Then sample a few encounters. If a creature is named without a full stat block, find where the book expects you to obtain it. If a location needs a separate map, confirm whether that map is included, downloadable or sold separately.
| Requirement | Question that resolves it |
|---|---|
| Core play rules | Which rules version will the group use? |
| Characters | Premade sheets, creation rules or an existing party? |
| Opponents and items | Are their rules printed here or referenced elsewhere? |
| Maps and handouts | GM-only views, player copies and printable scale? |
| Digital use | Does this purchase include the platform content you intend to open? |
Distinguish a self-contained starter
Wizards’ Heroes of the Borderlands public-play guidance says its required play material is contained in the box. That statement belongs to that starter product; it is not a property of every hardcover adventure. D&D’s free rules are another possible source of core material, but you must check whether they contain the particular options and opponents your selected adventure references.
Do not buy all three core books automatically just because a shopping checklist says so. Identify the actual gaps first. A GM who already owns the appropriate references has a different purchase need from a newcomer with no rules at all.
Make the digital decision separately
D&D Beyond’s digital sourcebooks provide applicable tool content within that platform. A print adventure does not establish that you also own the digital module. If you need prepared online maps or character options, inspect the explicit bundle and its included features. A complete printed campaign can still require additional digital setup.
