Choose an RPG purchase format by what it lets you do at the table. A physical book, downloadable PDF, digital compendium and virtual tabletop module can contain similar words while providing different access and tools.

Two concrete examples
D&D Beyond describes its digital sourcebooks as platform books rather than PDFs; applicable content also unlocks in its tools. Its explicitly labeled physical-and-digital core bundle provides both formats. Neither fact establishes that an ordinary copy from another shop includes the same entitlement.
Paizo separately lists a PDF edition of its older Beginner Box and says that purchase includes legacy and Remaster versions. This is a statement about that particular listing. It should not be extended to every Paizo print book, every newer box or a third-party marketplace offer.
Buy the access you will actually use
For a table that passes one reference around, print avoids competing for a screen but cannot be searched like a digital reference. For a GM who prints handouts, a downloadable file may matter more than a character builder. For remote play, prepared walls, tokens or journals can save setup only if the specific module includes them.
Make a one-line entitlement record: product, format, platform, account owner, included files and sharing conditions. Then add the costs of any required second purchase. A cheap book with an assumed digital unlock can cost more than the correct bundle.
Check an offline scenario before relying on it
If your play space lacks reliable internet, read the platform’s current offline instructions and try the exact device before game night. Do not equate ownership of an account license with a permanent, exportable PDF. Keep access credentials private and use the platform’s supported sharing features.
