Choose a printed RPG map when the location is fixed and its presentation matters. Choose a reusable grid when you expect to redraw scenes. In either case, verify the physical scale, usable area and surface instructions before buying accessories.
Separate fictional distance from print size
D&D’s grid rules use squares representing five feet, while its table-equipment guidance describes one-inch physical squares. Those are different measurements. A map shown in an adventure book is not necessarily printed at tabletop scale. If a room is twenty squares wide, a one-inch-per-square print needs twenty inches before borders or surrounding rooms are added.
| Option | Useful advantage | Practical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Printed encounter map | Detailed fixed scene with little drawing during play | Printing, storage and a separate copy for each location |
| Reusable grid | Flexible layouts and improvised changes | Drawing time and compatible markers |
| Screen or projected map | Easy switching between digital scenes | Power, visibility, device space and software setup |
Marker compatibility belongs to the exact surface
Paizo’s Starfinder Flip-Mat: Basic Terrain listing identifies a 24-by-30-inch unfolded mat, 8 by 10 inches folded, and a coating with specific marker instructions. That does not establish the same compatibility for another brand’s vinyl mat. Read the manufacturer’s instructions; “erasable” alone does not tell you whether a dry-erase marker is suitable.
Before committing to a large map, place paper at its intended size on your table. Add character sheets, dice and drinks outside the playing area. A map that technically fits the tabletop can still leave players unable to reach the center comfortably.
Choose the smallest setup that tells the scene
If only relative positions matter, a rough sketch may communicate enough. If a scenario depends on exact terrain and distances, preserve the required geometry and label what the drawing represents. Keep GM secrets off player-facing prints, and test a small sample before paying for a large-format print.
