Buying a Used Escape-Room Game: Check Every Component and Irreversible Step

A used escape-room box is a good candidate only when its exact contents, condition and reset requirements are known. “All cards included” is not enough if a booklet has been marked, a sheet cut up, a sealed item opened or an app-dependent adventure no longer works on your device.

A used escape-room box is a good candidate only when its exact contents, condition and reset requirements are known. “All cards included” is not enough if a booklet has been marked, a sheet cut up, a sealed item opened or an app-dependent adventure no longer works on your device.

Identify the edition before inspecting the pieces

Ask for the full title, language, publisher and product code. Several adventures can share a series name while using different materials. Find the official instructions for that precise title, then compare the component list with the seller’s inventory. Do not substitute the contents of a newer edition or another regional release.

Use an inspection process that avoids exposing the solution. A seller can count numbered card backs and describe whether pages are intact without sending close-up photographs of every answer. Ask them to separate spoiler photographs from ordinary condition evidence.

Component or condition Question to resolve
Cards and numbered materials Are all expected identities present, not merely the advertised total?
Booklets and sheets Have any been written on, folded, cut, torn or replaced?
Sealed items Have they been opened, and does the exact game require an original seal?
Decoder or special objects Are all moving parts and unique pieces present and undamaged?
Software or codes Can the required app or access method be used by the next owner?

Some games deliberately consume their materials

The official EXIT: The Pharaoh’s Tomb manual explains that the experience can involve altering playing materials and is designed for a single play. A seller’s statement that the game was handled carefully does not reverse a required cut, tear or written answer.

Do not recommend tracing, photocopying or unofficial replacement downloads as though they are publisher-approved restoration. If a used game depends on replacement materials, identify the exact missing item and verify an authorized source before treating the box as playable.

Check replacement support narrowly

Thames & Kosmos has a replacement-sheet support page for Dead Man on the Orient Express, model 694029. That page concerns particular sheets for that specific adventure. It is not a promise that every consumed component in every EXIT game can be replaced.

A downloadable rulebook may restore the instructions while doing nothing about missing cards, a damaged decoder or a completed puzzle sheet. Record each missing part separately. Include any confirmed replacement cost or wait in your decision, but do not invent a price or delivery date.

Distinguish restoration from replay value

There are two questions: can an unfamiliar group play the complete game, and would a previous solver enjoy doing it again? A physically resettable box may still contain a fixed mystery whose answers are already known. A remembered solution changes the experience even when every component is pristine.

For the next group, ask whether the previous owner left notes, sorted cards into solution order or marked helpful clues. Where official reset instructions exist, use them. Do not assume that putting everything back in the box reconstructs the intended beginning.

Make a clear used-versus-new decision

An app requirement also survives the resale. Compare a title such as UNLOCK! New Game Adventures with the current application and your device before buying. A complete physical inventory cannot substitute for required software.

Choose the used copy when you can verify the exact edition, complete playable condition and any reset or replacement process. If critical evidence is missing, keep the listing unresolved. For a fixed event where a failed start would waste everyone’s evening, that uncertainty may be more important than the apparent saving.
