Buy RPG figures to communicate the information your game needs. Identifiable tokens can be sufficient for position tracking; detailed miniatures add visual appeal but do not automatically make the rules clearer.
Check what the system requires
D&D’s free equipment guidance allows substitutes such as coins or paper counters for miniatures. Paizo’s Secrets of the Unlit Star Beginner Box supplies paperboard pawns and bases. These examples show that a supported visual setup need not require a painted miniature collection. For another system, read its positioning rules before assuming the same solution applies.
| Representation | Best reason to choose it | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Flat tokens | Clear numbering and compact storage | Visibility under other pieces and readable orientation if needed |
| Standees | Recognizable art with a small storage footprint | Matching bases, stability and view from both sides |
| Miniatures | Three-dimensional presence and hobby enjoyment | Base footprint, fragile parts and transport space |
Prioritize identity and footprint
Two identical enemies are easier to track if each has a number or colored marker that corresponds to the GM’s notes. A beautiful figure that spills across nearby spaces can confuse positioning. Compare the base with the grid and the creature’s rules footprint; sculpt height and fictional size are not interchangeable measurements.
For a first adventure, list the number of distinct creatures that may appear at the same time. Use versatile pieces for the most common roles and a labeled substitute for an unusual monster. Buying one sculpt for every creature mentioned in a book can create cost and storage work without improving the first session.
A practical starter kit
Begin with enough identifiable pieces for the party and one likely encounter, plus a simple way to mark conditions. Test visibility from every seat. Upgrade the pieces you enjoy using repeatedly. If collecting and painting are part of the attraction, treat that as a separate hobby benefit and budget rather than describing it as a rules requirement.
